Ugly Christmas Sweater Party
One of the latest trends in holiday entertaining is bringing back those hated holiday sweaters with Ugly Christmas Sweater parties. That’s right, entire holiday get-togethers are now being planned around these knitted nightmares and you can get in on the fun with some quick and easy tips for throwing a great Ugly Christmas Sweater Party.
Make sure the ugly sweater theme takes center stage beginning with the invitations. Use patterns from ugly sweaters to decorate your invitations and make it clear that everyone must wear an ugly sweater in order to attend the party. Remember, it’s all about having fun and reveling in the ugliness!
The Ugly Sweater
Find the ideal ugly Christmas sweater by either raiding your closet (yes, we can all admit it, most of us still have one of those creatures lurking in there!) or hitting the local thrift store. Thrift stores, Salvation Army stores and garage sales are all great places to find really tacky sweaters that will make all of your friends envious.
Decorate using the same ugly sweater type patterns that you did for the invitations. Streamers, napkins, signs, you name it… and you can likely find décor that will work in your local party store, retail store or even online.
You can make the menu potluck to make it easier on yourself. Just have everyone bring his or her favorite dish and you can provide the main course. Whatever you do for food, don’t forget to include some ugly sweater themed desserts… sweater cookies, cupcakes or if you’re really up for the challenge, an ugly sweater cake can make your party stand out.
Play Christmas themed party games, such as seeing who can name Christmas Carols from just a few notes or who can come up with the source of famous quotes from Christmas movies. You could even play a Christmas version of charades.
Have awards for various categories. Obviously, you’ll want one for ugliest sweater contest but you can expand on that and have awards for most original sweater, best combo (which can include actual couples or just two people whose ugly sweaters go together really well!), most festive, most likely to go viral, etc. And have fun “prizes” for the lucky winners.
Remember, being ugly is the whole point, and it can be a great way for people to let go of their inhibitions when everyone is laughing at themselves and each other. So if you want to have a great time this holiday season, why not consider getting your kitsch on and having a party that celebrates the exquisite ugliness of the Christmas sweater.
Don’t forget to take those unflattering photos! It’s a great way to remember the night and to thank your guests for coming by, highlighting the fun you all had.
