Snack Ideas for Christmas Eve
The stockings are hung, the presents are wrapped, all the pre-holiday planning is over and now it’s Christmas Eve. You’ve finally got time to sit back, relax and put your feet up. So, whether you’re enjoying movie time, visiting with family and friends or just having some quick “me” time, you’ll want the perfect snack to make your Christmas celebration complete.
There are many different ideas for Christmas Eve snacking. Of course, when most people think of the holidays and snacks, their minds go to Christmas cookies or candies. Obviously there are a multitude of recipes available, from traditional chocolate chip and oatmeal to holiday favorites like snowflake sugar cookies and peppermint bark.
A newer trend that is as much fun to make as it is to eat is cookie or cake pops. These are bite size little morsels of cake or individual cookies attached to a stick and then covered in milk, white or dark chocolate and decorated. For cookie pops, it’s easiest to use a sandwich cookie like an Oreo as you can simply turn it on its side and push the stick…carefully…into the creamy center. You can decorate them in any way you like, including holiday themes like snowmen, reindeer and Santa faces.
Another fun idea is to make “reindeer crunch”. This is basically a holiday version of traditional snack mix that can include almost any combination of your favorite snack foods from pretzels to Chex cereals to nuts, mixed together and accented with seasonings to add some zip to the flavor. You can find many different recipes online or just improvise one of your own.
If you prefer something healthy to the sweets, there are certainly options for you. Try strawberry Santas… simply slice off the bottom of a strawberry so it has a flat surface to stand on, then trim off the very pointed end of the berry. Add a dollop of whipped cream then replace the pointed top for a “hat”. Use chocolate sprinkles or cake decorations to make eyes and a mouth and you’ve got a mini Santa that tastes as good as he looks.
You can also use several kinds of fruits, including strawberries, kiwis and grapes to make an edible fruit arrangement shaped like a Christmas tree. Another quick and easy idea for a snack on a stick is “Grinch Kabobs”. You simply take an ordinary skewer and place on it one grape for the head, a slice of banana for the fur trim, a strawberry for the hat and top it off with a mini marshmallow for the pom-pom!
On the savory end of things, one clever idea for parties or large groups is to make mini hot dogs wrapped in crescent dough and arrange them in a circular “wreath” design. Set a bowl of dipping sauce in the middle and you’re good to go! For another clever idea, why not use your holiday cookie cutters to cut shapes in homemade pizza dough, then add your favorite toppings for holiday mini-pizzas?
The possibilities are almost endless; it’s just a matter of having a good imagination and gathering together the right ingredients. So make sure your Christmas Eve is a delicious one… happy snacking to all and to all a good time!
